What is PDF?

Portable Document Format (PDF) was developed by Adobe Systems  and requires the use of free Adobe Acrobat Reader software to view a document in this format. PDF is the file format for representing documents in a manner that is independent of the original application software, hardware, and operating system used to create those documents. A PDF file can describe documents containing any combination of text, graphics, and images. PDFs are widely used on the Internet for the following reasons:

  • PDFs are the standard for more secure, dependable electronic information exchange recognized by industries and governments around the world, and they are compliant with industry standards
  • PDFs are viewable and printable on any platform, e.g. Macintosh, Microsoft® Windows®, UNIX®, and many mobile platforms
  • PDFs maintain information integrity, as the files look exactly like the original documents and preserve the source file information (text, drawings, 3D, full-color graphics, photos, and even business logic) regardless of the application used to create them
  • PDFs leverage full-text search features to locate words, bookmarks, and data fields in documents
  • PDFs work with assistive technology to help make information accessible to people with disabilities
